Carnegie Speech partners with Sunburst Digital to bring patented spoken English language learning technologies to K12 student populations

September 22, 2015 | Pittsburgh, PA & Chicago, IL

Almost 8 million ELL students make optimizing spoken English language proficiency a red hot market for any educational technology provider serving K12.

Founded with commercialized technologies from Carnegie Mellon University and the Language Technologies Institute, Carnegie Speech provides oral English language learning solutions to top graduate schools.

“Our Native Accent solutions have become the de facto standard for employers, governments and knowledge-based organizations intent on improving the English language grammar, fluency and pronunciation for their diverse populations of human capital who are non-native English speakers,” says Angela Kennedy, CEO of Carnegie Speech. “It was only a matter of time before we found the right partner for K12.”

Sunburst and Carnegie Speech have released two new solutions for K12: Carnegie ESL and Carnegie ESP.

“As we celebrate our 30th year supporting schools with innovative software programs, it is fitting that we are very excited to work with Carnegie to offer a game-changing set of applications that can improve the lives of countless English language learners and speech specialists,” says Ken Leonard, CEO of Sunburst. Carnegie ESL, powered by their patented pinpointing technology, is a comprehensive program that research demonstrates improves a student’s fluency by more than two times in as little as 10-20 hours of use.”

Carnegie’s proprietary technologies include real time voice analysis of 110 native languages ensuring that each learner, regardless of where they are from, has an individualized, highly adaptive path to ESL success. “There is nothing currently available in K12 that compares with this technology,” says Leonard.

Carnegie ESP, or Early Speech Program, provides a turnkey program for students in K-5 who only visit school speech pathologists and language therapists 1-2 times per week.

“These in-school professionals face enormous obstacles in balancing how to effectively screen and monitor the growing enrollments of learners struggling with speech processing and developmental challenges,” says Kennedy. Leonard adds, “It’s altogether common that new immigrant populations can be misplaced in speech and Special Education programs, reflecting how difficult diagnosing their individual situations can be without the proper tools. With Carnegie ESP, that entire screening pain is mitigated and made much easier.”
